Cork University Press aims to stimulate Irish learning by reflecting distinctive and distinguished scholarship in its lists. The Press began publishing in 1925 and is the oldest university press in Ireland. Its philosophy has been to encourage a broad spectrum of debate in the field of Irish Studies by publishing research which engages with contemporary cultural debate. Owing to the spread of Irish Studies in third level (university) institutions during recent decades, throughout North America, Europe and Australia, research in the field has increased in depth and range. Our list reflects this growth in its engagement with a variety of discourses. While the Press specializes in the broad field of Irish Studies, its subject range extends across the fields of music, art history, geography, film studies, literary and poetry criticism. The focus of our list is however in the areas of Irish cultural history, archaeology and landscape studies. A number of our titles are viewed by critics as ground-breaking in their contribution to the field, namely the Atlas of the Irish Revolution, Atlas of the Great Irish Famine, Atlas of the Irish Rural Landscape, The Companion to Irish Traditional Music, the Critical Conditions series, and most notably Volumes IV and V of the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing: Irish Women’s Writing and Traditions. The Press publishes approximately 15 books a year. All of our titles are rigorously peer-reviewed and edited. (The peer-review process is described in more detail on the Information for Authors page of this site.) We have three employees. Irish Academic Press was established in Dublin in 1974 by Frank Cass following the demise of the Irish University Press, and gradually developed into one of the leading Irish publishers of academic and scholarly writing on a wide range of subjects within the broad field of Irish Studies. Following Mr Cass’s death in 2007, his son Stewart continued and expanded the business while remaining true to the core values of his father’s company – academic quality, integrity, scholarly research and accessible, insightful, writing. Key titles over the years, such as Reflections on the Irish State by Garrett Fitzerald and The Surnames of Ireland by Edward MacLysaght, exemplify how IAP brought to the fore many important and revealing aspects of Irish history, literature, society and current affairs. The evolution of the Press continued in 2012 when the company was acquired by local book industry figure Conor Graham, formerly of New Island and Brookside Publishing Services, and the company moved to its current location in Co. Kildare. So began another era in its long and proud history. 2012 also saw the establishment of a general books imprint, Merrion Press, created to develop our publishing to include more popular and accessible titles distinct from the typical academic projection of the IAP format, and ultimately to provide a vehicle for the growing number of general titles published each year which appeal to a broader audience. As the new owner of Irish Academic Press, Conor is committed to continuing the work of his predecessors and building on its strong brand, with plans to publish 30-35 new titles each year, spanning the companies traditional subject areas of modern Irish history, military history, political history, historical biographies, as well as titles in the new areas of current affairs and memoir.

In 1768 John McMurray was looking for a business opportunity. Confident that ‘total blockheads in the trade’ were making fortunes, he invested £700 of his wife’s money in publishing. A convivial hustler, Murray’s Fleet Street shop soon became a hub of literary life. Following the success of Byron’s Childe Harold, John Murray moved to Albemarle Street where, a few years later, early cantos of Byron’s Don Juan were sold from the window to an eager crowd. Anticipating the needs and desires of the reading public, John Murray were the first publisher to produce a mass-market cookery book as well the first self-help title, the first travel guides and, in Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation, the first television tie-in. Though much has changed since John Murray published Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, Jane Austen’s Emma, Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, John Betjeman’s Collected Poems, and launched ‘the greatest travel book of the twentieth century’, Patrick Leigh Fermor’s A Time of Gifts, we remain entrepreneurial, curious and excited about discovering and nurturing new voices that can shape and shake our world. John Murray is the home of prize-winning debuts including Beasts of No Nation by Uzodinma Iweala, The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley and The Glorious Heresies by Lisa McInerney. Elmet by Fiona Mozley, Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh and Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones have all been shortlisted for the Booker and Mick Herron’s bestselling Slough House series have been heralded as some of the best thrillers of all time. Our non-fiction includes Andrea Wulf’s Costa-winning, The Invention of Nature, prize-shortlisted Harold McGee’s Nosedive, Jill Lepore’s If Then, and bestsellers Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime, Randall Munroe’s What If?, Kassia St Clair’s The Secret Lives of Colour, and Stephen Hawking’s final book, Brief Answers to the Big Questions. In 2015 we created the John Murray Originals list, a home for risk-taking, genre-defying fiction and non-fiction that has launched the careers of Jessie Greengrass and Fiona Mozley. In 2021 we begin the John Murray Journeys, a beautifully designed series of classic and forgotten travel writing with new introductions. And in 2022, we will launch Baskerville, our distinctive crime and thriller list. Literary fiction, narrative non-fiction, science, history, biography, memoir, travel and nature writing that is entertaining, absorbing, surprising and prize-winning.
