Greenmount - Land of Learning by Derek Alexander
Hardback; 30.00 Euro / 36.00 USD / 20.00 UK; 192 pages [Add To Basket]
Greenmount - Land of Learning traces the fascinating story of agricultural education at Greenmount College outside Antrim. From its first tentative steps in the early 1900s to the purchase of various farms including the hill farm at Glenwherry, and the development of its farm buildings, research facilities, curriculum and teaching provision, Greenmount is now definitely at the cutting edge.
Whenever past students or staffof Greenmount meet, it is not very long before stories start to flow and the reminiscing begins. The phrase most often heard at these gatherings is "It was the best year of my life." The world-class reputation of the College, the continuing high success rate of the students and their contribution to many facets of the Northern Ireland agri-food industries suggest that without doubt the last 90 years at Greenmount for most was indeed "time well spent."
Irish Art 1830-1990 by Brian Fallon
Trade Paperback; 16.50 Euro / 20.00 USD / 11.50 UK; 208 pages, with colour and black-and-white illustrations throughout
While Irish writers have achieved international prominence in the twentieth century, Irish artists have made relatively little impact abroad. Yet for over a century and a half, Ireland has continuously produced painters and sculptors of international stature. In this book the author traces the development of Irish art from its roots in the Romantic Movement through to the end of the twentieth century, and shows how it has reflected the growth of national self-consciousness and the evolution of Irish culture.
Children of the Poor Clares by Mavis Arnold and Heather Laskey
Paperback; 10 Euro / 12.50 USD / 7.00 UK; 160 pages [Add To Basket]
On Tuesday 23 February 1943 a fire broke out in a County Cavan orphanage run by the enclosed order of Poor Clare nuns, killing thirty-five children and an elderly woman. The horrific tragedy was widely covered by Irish newspapers and an inquiry was launched into how such a terrible thing could have happened. The report’s findings stated that the loss of life occurred due to faulty directions being given, and an inadequate rescue and fire-fighting service. Many local people felt that the inquiry was a cover-up and that more lives would have been saved if the first reaction of the nuns hadn’t been to avoid themselves or the girls being seen in their nightclothes. The tragedy led to questions as to how an enclosed order of nuns came to run an orphanage in the first place when few of them were more suited to the discipline of the religious life than the care of children. Here are the stories of some of the children who once lived in St Josephs Orphanage and what happened to them afterwards.
In Praise of Poteen by John McGuffin
Paperback; 13.00 Euro / 16.00 USD / 9.50 UK; 166 pages, with photographs
A book of almost classic status to those who know it, first published in 1978, this book deserves to be widely read. Its subject, the time-honoured Irish practice of illegal distillation of whiskey, is one of great human and social interest. Its treatment by the author is scholarly and entertaining and enriched with a vast knowledge of the history: techniques and lore of the poitin makers. Based upon much personal knowledge and anecdotal evidence as well as on documented sources, it is a book which can never be written again, for the old men who gave their reminiscences to the author are no longer with us.
